Riyadh, July 04, 2026, SPA -- Egypt advanced to the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 after defeating Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout, following a 1-1 draw after regulation and extra time in their Round of 32 match on Friday.

Egypt took the lead in the 13th minute through Emam Ashour before Australia equalized in the 55th minute when Mohamed Hany inadvertently turned the ball into his own net. The score remained level through the remainder of regulation and extra time, sending the match to penalties, where Egypt prevailed 4-2.

With the victory, Egypt progressed to the Round of 16, where it will face the winner of the match between Argentina and Cabo Verde as it aims to continue its impressive run in the tournament.
