Saudi Arabia's Blue Holes: Deep-Sea Formations Reveal Unique Geological Treasures

Jeddah, December 04, 2025, SPA -- The blue holes along the southwestern coast of Saudi Arabia, extending between Makkah and Jazan, represent some of the Red Sea’s most uncommon marine formations. These deep underwater sinkholes appear as distinct dark circular depressions within the surrounding turquoise waters.

Their unique character stems from geological formations developed over millions of years through rock fissures, limestone collapses, and tectonic activity.

Today, the Blue Holes Protected Area is recognized as one of the Kingdom's most significant environmental conservation projects. It covers over 16,500 square kilometers and includes more than 20 marine islands, providing sensitive habitats of great biological importance.
